President Joe Biden called on Congress to pass tighter gun regulations on the third anniversary of the Parkland school shooting, including the prohibition of assault weapons.
On Sunday, Mr. Biden urged Congress to pass legislation in a White House statement requiring background checks on all gun purchases, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and withdrawing protection for gun producers.
Mr. Biden said, “Today, as we mourn with the Parkland community, we mourn for all who have lost loved ones to gun violence,”
More information about Mr. Biden’s proposal were not given by the White House.
A gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018. Many of the students and members of the group have been ardent crusaders for tighter gun laws since then. The shooter is now awaiting trial.
March for Our Lives, their group, has been pressing Mr. Biden to name a gun czar who will serve in an adjacent Cabinet role. The organization demanded that the National Director of Gun Violence Prevention “reflect the understanding that gun violence is a public health crisis, and disproportionately affects our most vulnerable populations.” according to a statement sent to CNN in December.
Mr. Biden vowed to take action on weapons during his first 100 days in office on the campaign trail. Everytown for Gun Protection, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action gun control groups said last week that they met with representatives of the Biden administration. Both Everytown and Moms Demand said that roadmaps on how the Biden administration will take action on gun violence have been released.
On February 12, Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was killed in the Parkland shooting, tweeted that he had met with Susan Rice, Biden’s domestic policy advisor.
